Common Greetings

Hello/Hi.

Good afternoon/morning/evening.

HOW questions:

How are you? /How have you been?/ How’s it going? (response: good/fine/not bad/okay…and you?)

WHAT questions:

What’s up? What’s new?/ What have you been up to? (response: not much….and you?)

 

Small talk examples

Weather comments:

What a beautiful day!/ Wow, it’s really cold out today.

Common location comments:

It’s quite cold in here./ This is a wonderful room./ This is the loudest café I’ve ever been in!/ This elevator is slow, right?

Compliments:

I love/like your shoes/ glasses/jacket/purse/hat/backpack. (Nothing physical, or that a person cannot change!)
